'ZINES

DREAM #1, 2 & 3
US fanzine concentrating on the folkier end of the psychedelic scene. Ranges from the reasonably well known (Vashti Bunyan, Peter Blegvad) to the 3 men and a dog appealers (Piano Magic, anybody?). Also includes some coverage of other media, e.g. an interview with Terry Jones and somebody's mother's drawings dating from the 1930s. The print size is minute and my friend Matthew rates it officially 'too dense for comfort'. But if you enjoy Ptolemaic Terrascope, you may want to take a look.

NO KIND OF SUPERSTAR #4
This increasingly regular 'zine continues Carl Superstar's and friends' always relevant views on the music world. In this issue bubblegum furry suited heroes The Banana Splits get the once over, Arthur Lee's recent UK gigs receive the thumbs up, UK baroque wonder Duncan Browne is appraised, SD faves The Third Rail make an appearance and there's plenty of reviews and bits and pieces on everything from Oz punk (Radio Birdman) to humble indie pop… and oh yeah, my own band Little Bare Big Bear get a nice review too! A good read that brings to mind Bucketful Of Brains when it used to be fun.

TRY IT #8
Crude and primitive copied 'zine that makes up for lacking in fine layout and kudos with a genuine heartfelt love for the music. Trevor is a garage/psych nut! In this issue he comments on, interviews and summarises the careers and records of bands from both today's and the '60s garage spectrum. A lengthy piece on The Standells is well worth a read and Trev's reviews are very much in the style of the old mod 'zines I was brought up on in the '80s. This personal approach and rough around the edges affair is just how a 'zine should be… There're too many classy mags out these days, so roll on…
